Confidential AI: Telephony vs E2EE communication

6 mins read

End-to-end encryption solved a specific problem: keeping a message private between two people while it travels between them. It is the reason you trust a chat app with a private conversation. But calls are different, and AI changes the rules entirely. The moment you want a machine to understand a call, something has to decrypt it, and that is where most privacy promises quietly break.

What end-to-end encryption actually protects

End-to-end encryption guarantees that data is scrambled in transit and only the two endpoints hold the keys, so no server in the middle can read it. That is a strong guarantee for messaging, but it stops at the endpoint: once data arrives and is decrypted to be used, E2EE has nothing more to say about what happens next.

Why AI on calls is a harder problem

To detect a scam, take a note, or draft a follow-up, an AI model has to actually read the content of a call. Traditional cloud AI decrypts your data on a server it controls, processes it in plaintext, and asks you to trust that it is deleted afterward. The call was private right up until the moment it became useful, and then it was exposed to the provider, the cloud, and anyone with access.

Confidential inference closes the gap

NAIL keeps calls private through the whole pipeline, not just in transit. Scam detection and basic features run entirely on-device. Advanced LLM features run inside secure enclaves (TEEs) that keep data encrypted even while it is being processed, isolated from the operating system, the cloud provider, and human access. You get the intelligence of modern AI without handing over the conversation to get it.
